Culture

Vinag Wine Cellar

In the center of Maribor lies one of the largest and oldest classical wine cellars in Europe. Maribor’s Vinag, with its rich tradition of viticulture, winemaking, and trade, continues its story.

The oldest part of the cellar, boasting an area of 15,000 m² with 2.1 kilometers of underground tunnels, was built in 1847. Wooden barrels, concrete tanks, and bottles with wine patina have a combined capacity of 3 million liters. The most precious feature is certainly the wine archive, which currently houses 85,000 bottles of premium archive wine.

When you descend the 23 steps into Vinag’s wine cellar (and yes, this number also has a hidden meaning!), you can feel the magnificence of the space and the story it tells. We believe it will touch you as well, so we invite you to visit them.

The World's Oldest Vine

The world’s oldest vine can still be found in the old city center on Lent in front of the Old Vine House. The Black Velvet vine or Blauer Kölner, with a confirmed age of over 400 years, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest fruit-bearing vine. The old vine symbolizes the rich wine culture of the city of Maribor, the region of Styria, and the country of Slovenia.

The Museum of the World’s Oldest Vine places it in the context of the urban development of Lent and Maribor as a viticultural center of Slovenian Styria. It is based on preserved movable heritage, reinforced by the fact of its exceptional age. The exhibition is enriched by selected materials and texts, as well as computer animations and video recordings.

Maribor Regional Museum

In the dominant castle building in the city center is the Maribor Regional Museum, a modern facility with aesthetically refined exhibitions that introduce visitors to the city’s history from the Neolithic period to the beginning of the 20th century.

Pohorje and Vineyards

Pohorje is a natural oasis with extensive forests, the Šumik primeval forest, caves and pastures, pristine waters of Pohorje, waterfalls and peat bogs with lakes that are home to Europe’s largest butterfly and other precious animal species.

Climbing the city hills is not only a good way to relax, but also rewards you with magnificent views. Enjoy the view of the city and its surroundings all the way to Pohorje.
